My dad is a great story about coming here and having to make it without his parents - definitely in the same camp as a lot of Cubans. He didn't complain, he sold shoes, and went through school. He really is like a patriarch of big accounting here in South Florida. He is one of the first Hispanics to get recognition for his field. I'm very grateful to be the son of an accountant. It gives you a very good business acumen because you're sitting in a restaurant and he's talking to you about their PNL and how things are going in the books. It gives you an education beyond the face value of things. It's really paid off for me and my brothers. He is one of those great boy-dads who really set up his kids to carry the torch.

So...our engagement ring was designed by Walt (Adena’s husband) - who we met at the Pinecrest Farmer's Market about 4 years ago. We were buying fruit from Adena at the LNB stand and started chatting (like we love to do with vendors at the market). I noticed her wedding band; she mentioned it was designed by her husband and called him over for introductions. He confirmed that he is indeed a jewelry designer and gave us a website to see his work. As we were walking away, I casually mentioned to my then boyfriend of only 1 year, "Hey, maybe we'll get him to design our wedding rings someday". Almost 4 years later, Kēvens proposed with the most stunning, unique, and magical ring...designed by Walt. How's that for a Farmer's Market testimonial?!

I like to coach my son's baseball team. I'm assistant coach. We're practicing on the same field where I used to play which is crazy to think about. The thing I miss most about baseball, is not playing the game, it's the camaraderie. It's hard to explain to a seven-year-old, but I just want him to have fun and make those friendships too.

I think a lot of chefs are starting to utilize more vegetables- focusing on main dishes that don’t feature animal proteins. It’s good for the environment and it’s good that they are opening their eyes to different ways of composing a plate. At the same time, there is a burger battle going on. I see lots of chefs trying to recreate the classic burger. A few years ago, burgers were about adding short rib and truffles. Now, chefs are trying to make a simple burger focusing on the bun, meat, cheese and sauce.

Some by trading, some off eBay. There are some hidden spots in Miami. Mikey, over at Technique Records on 79th street is amazing and he can usually find really cool stuff. Yesterday and Today on Bird Road. The most hidden record spot for new stuff is the Museo Del Disco. It is a true record store that's been there for a long time.

My new book is about making food. It’s called The12 Week Diabetes Cookbook and the subtitle is - Your super simple plan for organizing budgeting and cooking amazing dinners. It’s 12 weeks of recipes. My theory is that, if you have the food in the house - you are more likely to cook a heathier meal. At the beginning of each week, I give you a shopping list for the entire week and recipes based on that list. Also, it’s a book for a budget. The average meal is about $5 per person per meal. All of the recipes have been vetted by the American Diabetes Association.

Basically, anyone who could build a homemade device that could float in the water could escape. My uncles, cousins and other relatives built a raft and 27 of us took the risk. It was 24 hours at the sea and it was nine children, nine women, and nine men. One was a pregnant woman. She was my inspiration because I was so scared. We were rescued by the US Coast Guard and transferred to Guantanamo. I was there for nine months.

I met then Senator Obama, on May 20th 2008 at an event sponsored by the Cuban American National Foundation, of which I am a member of the Board. We had a conversation about Cuba and Latin America and about Radio and TV Marti. I thought it was a casual conversation. To my surprise, I received a call from the White House in February.

Yes. It's always very different. We're doing commercial real estate and the market's been really, really good. We're more concerned about what's going to happen in five years than what happened in the last five years. Last five years were actually pretty easy to make money. The next five years is what we are concerned about. What's going to happen with interest rates and the economy? Rental prices have increased 15% year over year for the last five years. That's unsustainable especially with everything that's happening currently right now.

It's basically just seeds that we're grinding up. The Wheat Berry is a little kernel of wheat and when you grind it up, there are three parts. There's the germ, which is the fatty part. It's very nutrient dense; there's a wheat germ oil. There's the bran, which is the outer coating, also very nutrient dense and has a lot of vitamins and most of the fiber. And then the endosperm is the starch, like a pure white flour. When you eat white flour, you're only getting one part and you're missing out on the other nutrients. But, when you are fresh milling, you're getting all three parts in the flour, so you get the full nutrients.
